Concessionary housing loans for IDPs in Kilinochchi

Minister of Housing, Construction, Engineering services and Common Amenities, Wimal Weerawansa has instructed the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) to launch the first pilot programme of concessionary housing loans for the IDPs in the North in Kilinochchi. Under this programme a low interest will be levied on housing loans.

At a meeting held at the Parliamentary Complex recently, Minister Weerawansa issued those instructions and said a decision had been taken to provide Rs. 325,000 for each house. The construction site and families willing to construct houses would be identified by the District secretary within one month.

The General Manager of the NHDA, L. S. Palansuriya told The Island that the construction work would be carried out by the NHDA with the participation of the families concerned. The construction would be completed within four months, he said.

Minister Weerawansa said the recovery of loans would commence six months of the occupation of the houses. Concessionary loans would be provided by the NHDA to other families as well, who wished to construct houses in Kilinochchi, he said.

Minister Weerawansa said that the government would utilise the money to be repaid by the people of Kilinochchi to provide concessionary loans to other IDPs in the North.

Vanni District MP Murugesu Chandrakumar requested Minister Weerawansa to expand this concessionary loan programme to other parts of Kilinochchi, as well.

Present at discussions were Badulla District MP Denuka Vidanagamage, Chairman of NHDA Jayantha Samaraweera, Government Agent of Kilinochchi Ketheswaran, Additional Secretary to the Ministry K. W. P. Dayaratne, and L. S. Palansuriya, General Manager of NHDA.
