Consuls play a major role in Sri Lanka’s economic revival

Honourary Consuls representing foreign governments in Sri Lanka have a pivotal role to play in strengthening the country’s relations abroad, stated Minister of External Affairs, Professor G. L. Pieris, when he addressed Consuls at the Ministry. The Minister commented that after 20 years there were opportunities for economic revival in Sri Lanka and that these consuls should identify their areas of priorities in attracting investment and promotion of tourism.

Minister Pieris recalled President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s State visit to India and his own visit to the USA and the successful discussions that took place during these visits.

He highlighted the importance of the role played by the Sri Lankan Diaspora and stated that they were a significant and vocal segment and called upon them to play a meaningful role in the reconstruction of the North and East.

Minister Pieris also pointed out the need to highlight to the world the revival of the country’s economy and the improving business environment.

He noted the positive developments such as the forthcoming visit of the Ambani Brothers, the internationally renowned business magnates from India, who are due to visit Sri Lanka shortly to explore possible investment opportunities.

The Minister requested the Honourary Consuls to participate in this process and work in partnership with the Ministry of External Affairs to increase investment, tourism and business opportunities in an era of peace and tranquillity.
